Lesson Six
Hitroll and Damroll Hitroll and damroll, over the course of time, have caused more confusion that almost anything else, because so many people made up their own ideas for how they worked. Hopefully I will clear some of that up for you.
Hitroll in and of itself, makes up a complex little equation which is run every time you attempt to hit something. This equation, and all the components, are far too confusing to go into, so I will keep it very simple. The higher the better. More hitroll = more often you will hit. This is of course affected by how high level your opponent is, and what his/her Armor Class is. But overall, higher is better.
Damroll on the other hand is quite simple. Aside from resistances and such of your enemy, damroll literally adds itself to the damage of your weapon every time you hit. If you have 100 damroll, 100 damage is added to every hit you land. The killers to this are sanctuary, and protections. They can cut down the damage you do considerably, but nevertheless, as with hitroll, higher is better.

Saving Throws Much as with hitroll, the whole equation and such behind saving throws is far too confusing to go into, but basically, the lower your saving throw for a particular field, the more you will save against that type of thing. The four saving throw fields are: save vs. spell, save vs. magic, save vs. affect, and save vs. breath.
Save vs. Spell: resistance to spell based damage and spell affects. Example: Fireball, Sleep, Color Spray.
Save vs. Magic: resistance to spell-like effects from items (wands, scrolls, etc.). Example: Wand of fireball, Wand of Demonfire.
Save vs. Affect: resistance to certain 'special attacks' or spells from mobs as well as some secondary spell effects. Example: Hive mother's paralyzation, the Touch from Lost Souls, and the blinding ability of Color Spray.
Save vs. Breath: resistance to mobs' breath weapons. Example: Fire breath, Ice breath (from dragons basically).
Your saving throws are listed on your 'score', above your stats.
