In the early years of the creation of the earth, the gods met upon peak of Mount Dagon and decided how they would rule over the inhabitants of the newly-formed planet. Rules were established that the gods would not interfere in the natural events that befell the mortal creatures, and all of the deities agreed to abide by these guidelines or be banished from the heavens.

The earth moved through centuries of peace, and the creatures of the planet, especially the humans, banded together in clans to protect themselves. Eventually these clans turned against one another, and the world experienced its first wars. Two particularly powerful clans clashed frequently, and the strife created from their battles ravaged the land and threatened to destroy forever the world the gods had created. In a jealous rage, a god known as the Dark One attempted to turn the tide of the battles to favor his chosen people. But the warriors from the opposing clan were too powerful and they prevailed in a final battle even against the might of the Dark One.

The father of the gods, seeing the unjust behavior of his evil son elevated the two most powerful mortals in that great battle - and they became the gods Volito and Marinell. Marinell was given reign over the seas, and Volito was given charge of the underworld, where everything dark and sinister lurks. The gods approved of the act, and all rejoiced in the wisdom and benevolence of their father - except for the Dark One.

The Dark One worked in his realm of Gehennom to overcome Volito, who he felt had been given jurisdiction over what should have been a part of Gehennom. He plotted furiously, and one day he sent a messenger to Volito to lure Volito into Gehennom. When Volito left the underworld, the Dark One attacked him from ambush and wounded him grievously, but he was unable to kill the powerful Volito. Volito fled from the Dark One, who gathered together his allies in order to pursue Volito and finish the murder.

Volito realized that he would never be able to return to the underworld in safety, so he fled to the Western Sea to enlist the aid of Marinell. The Dark One and his minions were close behind, but Marinell sheltered Volito and made the sea rise up against the evil beings. Marinell and Volito used their powers to locate the largest uninhabited continent in the sea, and there they settled to recover from the attack.

The Dark One, realizing that his enemies had escaped, appealed to the other gods for justice. He cited Marinell's use of his powers over the ocean as unnatural interference in the order of the world. The father of the gods had no choice but to condemn Marinell's actions and exile him from the heavens for all eternity. The Dark One rejoiced in the declaration, and with the help of the other gods he was able to traverse the sea to deliver the proclamation to Marinell. But when he reached the uninhabited continent, he found Volito and Marinell well-rested, and they were ready to fight. In the ensuing struggle, the Dark One was subdued, and Volito used his powers to open a rift in the continent and sealed the Dark One in a remote part of Gehennom. The powers of Volito and Marinell had grown so great that the other gods cowered from their might and refused to confront them or to try to save the Dark One.

As Volito had interfered with the realm of the Dark One, he too was banished from the heavens. But the father of the gods, knowing the true nature of the conflict, did not seek to strip the new gods of their powers. He, knowing that they had always been more comfortable on the earth than in the realm of the gods, decreed that they should have dominion over the continent they now inhabited, and he named it Exile.

Over time the spirits of the exiled gods drew others to the continent. Creatures of all types that had been cast out by their respective societies made their way to the land mass, and a whole ecosystem developed. One day a ship arrived carrying two misfit humans named Gora and Hextall. They settled on the southern shore near the site Marinell and Volito originally landed, and they began to build shelters. Before long a steady stream of people began arriving, and the town of Caymus Harbor was founded. All of the creatures who found their way to Exile were united by the common fact that they were lost souls without another place to call home.

One day Gora and Hextall were adventuring in the mountains when they discovered the rift into Gehennom. Hextall and Gora were almost consumed by the guardians of the gates, but Marinell and Volito were able to rescue them.  Fearing their wounds would prove fatal, Marinell and Volito took pity on Gora and Hextall and granted them immortality - on the condition that they work to protect and assist the people and creatures of Exile.

But that is another story...
